Voigt with Soviet Space
By Ken Shimamoto
Since their band’s inception, the boys in Voigt have had big aspirations and loads of potential, but they’ve always seemed kinda like a work in progress. That’s all changed with Forever ’66, their newest recorded offering, which raises the stakes considerably. It didn’t hurt having Soviet Space’s Jordan Richardson on board, doing double duty as drummer and producer, but the songs, the concepts, the vibe are all Voigt.
While their record collections might be heavy on the Oasis, U2, and Wilco, onstage their saber-toothed fury recalls nothing so much as the idiot savant grandeur of the Stooges in their 1970 heyday, and Richardson has finally managed to capture that on shiny silver disc. “Ridesaway” and “Tomorrow Shines” rock as hard as you always knew Voigt could. Burke’s vocals, which have sometimes been shaky in the past, are a revelation here — full-on and passionate — and he gets in his two cents on recent political developments on “Expatriot.” Guitarist Joshua Loewen and bassist Taylor Mills provide the dirty-ass rock ’n’ roll thrills, while Richardson’s playing adds a whole new level of energy and drive to the proceedings. (You also get three remastered songs from their last e.p. as an added bonus.)
The Voigt boys even risk their Young Turk image by getting some musical mileage out of a couple of superannuated mofos (that’d be Benroi Herring on keys and this writer on guitar). Said superannuated mofos and Richardson will join Voigt onstage for the Cowtown c.d. release party, which teams Burke and his boys with whiteboy reggae gods Darth Vato and the rejuvenated Soviet Space.
