Not So Hidden in Haltom
A couple of doors down from the Hoffbrau on Denton Hwy in Haltom City hides a beautiful Thai gem, Bangkok Cuisine. Well, it’s been around for some 20 years, so maybe you all already know about it; Chow, Baby was only recently clued in by one of its favorite legpeople, TCU Joe. The extensive menu includes all the Thai classics, with heat levels clearly indicated, from papaya salad (hot) to pad thai (mild). Though you get plenty of food on your plate, there’s not a single dish over $10; the lunch specials, served with soup, spring roll, and fried rice, are in the $5 range. Just looking at the menu, Chow, Baby liked this place.
Like turned to love with the first bite of appetizer: chunks of deep-fried coconut-battered sweet potatoes, served with a cooling peanut-cucumber sauce ($4.95, and nearly enough for a meal in itself). For the main courses: deep-fried whole fish with spicy sauce (hot; $8.95) and imperial prawns (mild; $7.95), sautéed with broccoli and fresh garlic. (The shrimp tail-shells had been removed, a royal touch that Chow, Baby really appreciates.) The lovefest continued through dessert, with light-as-a-cloud housemade coconut ice cream ($2.25) and a banana/sticky rice concoction ($2) that was heavenly.
Bangkok Cuisine is hole-in-the-wallish and minimally adorned; the two decorating themes are posters of Thailand and newspaper clippings of Bangkok Cuisine’s many rave reviews. Here’s another one for their collection.
