The Show
Flickerstick with The Mermaid Purse, Green River Ordinance, and Voigt
By Anthony Mariani
Not that music lovers in Dallas should start looking to relocate to Cowtown anytime soon, but The Burden Brothers and Flickerstick — arguably the two most popular and best-drawing bands in North Texas — are playing the 817 on New Year’s Eve. Who woulda thunk it?
Though they’re both huge, the groups have totally different though equally rabid fan bases. The Burden Brothers get a lot of bikers, tattooed music snobs, and classic-rock heads (ostensibly a byproduct of frontman Vaden Lewis’ earlier days as leader of The Toadies, alt-rock radio darlings of the late 1990s). Flickerstick, whose members — all about 30 years old — aren’t any younger than the dudes in The Burden Brothers, still somehow attracts the indie kids, music geeks, and hot chicks. The club owners and both camps of musicians are probably happy with the accidental magic. Not only will the decision for fans be clear-cut, the shows will happen across town from each other: The Burden Brothers on the South Side; Flickerstick, near TCU.
Fans are advised to catch either performance or both. The guys in Flick, who no matter what else they’re doing on Dec. 31 have always managed to play an NYE gig somewhere (it’s become a tradition), don’t have any future local shows scheduled, and The Burden Brothers are recording new material.
Speaking of traditions, Pablo and the Hemphill 7 usually play the Black Dog Tavern on New Year’s Eve, but since the Dog is in the process of moving and is temporarily closed, the band has switched to the Wreck Room.
Flickerstick with The Mermaid Purse, Green River Ordinance, and Voigt at the Aardvark, 2905 W Berry St, FW. 817-926-7814. The Burden Brothers with The Feds, and The Color of May at Axis, 120 S Main St, FW. 817-870-AXIS. Both shows on Sat.
