Guitar God
These are palmy days for guitar lovers. Last week the new Guitar Fort Worth held its first concert of the season, and next week Fort Worth Classic Guitar Society will do the same. This weekend, though, it’s Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra that will be doing its thing for the six-string instrument.
Cuban guitarist Manuel Barrueco (a previous FWCGS guest) will be on hand to play Folias by the Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra and his own arrangement of Fratres by Arvo Pärt. This 1977 chamber work by an Estonian composer is already being recognized as a classic and has been arranged for any number of different groups of instruments. Barrueco will be accompanied by conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, who will also be leading the orchestra in Dances From the Andes by another Peruvian guy with a hyphenated name, Celso Garrido-Lecca.
Look at the above program and you’ll see items by three currently living composers. FWSO will still be playing Beethoven and Brahms this season, but it appears that Harth-Bedoya, having settled in here, is exercising his clout to bring us more stuff that we haven’t heard before, as Hekel Tavares, Osvaldo Golijov, Michael Daugherty, and other unfamiliar names will be on future programs. Don’t look now, but FWSO is now as good as any other local ensemble when it comes to performing contemporary music. For our previously stuffy orchestra, it looks like exciting times ahead.
