Aaa-choo!sing candidates
If Tom Vandergriff has the uneasy feeling that he’s being watched, he might have good reason. Although the filing deadline for next year’s primaries is still at least eight months away, the number of politicians hoping he won’t seek a fifth term as Tarrant County judge rivals the oak pollen count. The genial Vandergriff, considered unbeatable by many if he runs again, apparently has been emitting mixed signals about his plans, and his would-be successors are swarming around the political landscape like godforsaken bumblebees pollinating flowers all willy-nilly. County Commissioners Marty VanRavenswaay and Glen Whitley, District Clerk Tom Wilder, Tax Assessor-Collector Betsy Price, County Clerk Suzanne Henderson, Fort Worth City Councilman Chuck Silcox, and State Sen. Chris Harris of Arlington are like sensitive noses on a late April day — itching to run should Vandergriff call it quits. Commissioner Roy Brooks is also thought to be eyeing the center seat at the commissioners table, although, as the court’s lone Democrat, he faces an uphill battle — and the hill is covered in ragweed, mulberries, and cottonwood.
