Shack of the Week

By Chow Baby

In a mood for barbecue, Chow, Baby was aimlessly cruising around Stop Six, waiting for that sweet smell to lead it to a promised land—and there it arose, from The Rib Factory, 4708 E. Rosedale St. You know those few places in town (Fred’s!) where you can get not only great food but, if you want, some fascinating conversation as well? Here’s another one. Chow, Baby walked somewhat gingerly into this tiny, dilapidated joint and right into an enlightening and challenging discussion ranging from the fitness of women as preachers to what’s wrong with kids today (mainly the parents, we decided). It was terrific.

The ’cue was pretty good, too. And cheap. Most sandwiches are $3; a $7.50 plate held peppery sausage that tasted homemade and fatty, fall-apart brisket, both dressed in a thin but flavor-packed sweet sauce, plus heaps of potato salad and hearty beans. Check it out, and bring your wits.
