Prime-Time Players

Back in September, alt-country eclectic mood-rockers Woodeye appeared at the Texas Music Festival ... at 10:30 on Saturday morning. A crew from City Video was with them all day, taping as they loaded their gear at the Wreck Room, set up on the Rail Market stage that Live had vacated the previous night, and played to an audience consisting of singer Carey Wolff’s mother and a handful of friends.
The resultant 50-minute documentary, Woodeye, begins airing this week on Charter Cable Channel 31 (Community Cable Television). The shots of the band performing as event staff move porta-potties in front of the stage and the interviews with bandmembers Wolff, Graham Richardson, and Scott Davis show that these guys, if nothing else, have a good sense of humor. While it’s not Gimme Shelter or even Beyond the Music, it’s a well-produced portrait of a local band at work. Producer-director Chris Connolly said that if response is favorable, there might be more City Video productions in this vein. “I’m really grateful to my bosses for letting me do this,” he said. “And the band played their hearts out.”
Woodeye fans will enjoy seeing the band performing complete versions of a half-dozen songs and parts of a couple more. It’s kind of like having your own personal Woodeye show — which, uh, isn’t that different from what the folks at the Rail Market got that Saturday morning. Maybe even better: if you need to take a pause for the cause while watching the documentary, you won’t have to use a porta-potty.
Woodeye airs on cable Channel 31 at 4:30pm Sun, 11pm Mon, 9am and 8:30pm Tue, 5am and 10pm Wed, 9pm Thu, 5:30pm Fri-Sat.
