The Color of Goodness
Not that Battle of the Bands contests are good barometers of talent, but The Aardvark’s contest a week or two ago did right. Winning band The Color of May is indeed heavyweight-champ material. They played the Wreck Room a couple of weeks ago to a not-so-packed house and played so well that HearSay apparently has forgotten for whom they were opening. (That’s greatness!) The sound is emo on the rock tip, with bits of singer-songwriter melodicism thrown in for good measure. Everything revolves around twin brothers and band frontmen John and Matt Spivey, who with Doug Hampton have been playing together in various arrangements for nearly seven years. (Bassist John Kuykendall is a recent addition.) After forming as The Color of May early last year, the band cut a demo, a proper introduction that’s available at all Color of May shows.
