Electric Mountain Rotten Apple Gang

OK, we’re no pack of right-wing nut jobs, not by a mile, but even we get a little disconcerted on hearing that an outdoor festival will feature a spoken-word poet reading a new work dedicated to an ecosystem. Naturally, we wonder: Is that before or after everyone holds hands and sings “Kumbaya”?
But for all its corniness, Fort Worth’s inaugural Prairie Fest is no joke. Created reportedly to “celebrate our connection to our vanishing prairie homeland,” the event is a valiant attempt to raise awareness through agitprop. In between performances by Trigger Fish, Just Play, and the A.N.T.S. Marching Band, revelers may view exhibits of earth-friendly products, check out hybrid vehicles from Honda and Toyota, or chat with State Rep. Lon Burnam. Visitors will also be able to take a naturalist-guided tour through the Tandy Hills Nature Area, location of the event and a unique ecosystem.
For serious local music buffs, one of the performers is a known commodity and Wreck Room regular, the Electric Mountain Rotten Apple Gang. With dobro-master Darrin Kobetich, his younger brother Adam Kobetich on banjo, upright bassist Matt Skates, and acoustic guitarist Mark Deffebach, EmRag makes groovy, spacey, psychedelic bluegrass that’s trance-inducing and head-bobbing at the same time. They play Sunday at 3pm, and, no, they will not perform “Kumbaya.”
