Hot Patootie
If you’re a purist fan of either The Rocky Horror Show or the better-known Rocky Horror Picture Show, you may wanna avoid Quad C Theatre’s Rocky Horror (Puppet) Show. Not because the production is bad — actually, it’s pretty great. But because, well, Quad C’s version is a little — how you say? — different.
Most of the characters, songs, and situations are the same. Where Quad C goes into uncharted territory is in casting. True to the show’s title, puppets — big and small — are everywhere onstage: The titular horror is an amazing, 10-foot-tall walking mountain, and talking back to the stage à la die-hard RHPS fans are specially made live-action copies of Statler and Waldorf, the two grumpy codgers from The Muppet Show who sat in the balcony and heckled the performers. Be forewarned: Quad C’s duo isn’t as family-friendly. These two old dudes in the stage-right balcony drop a ton of F-bombs.
Neo-cons are also recommended to stay away. The show’s narrator, played so wonderfully in the Picture show by Charles Gray, is a George Bush impersonator. Shown only on the two large screens that hang above both sides of the stage, Dubya comes off as a complete rube. You’d think that the leader of the free world had flown in from D.C. to act naturally.
With the exception of two or three characters, the singing is uniformly bombastic, but in a good way. Several of the young actors are hard to look away from (Janet for the guys; Frank-N-Furter for the gals), the set design is appropriately campy, and Rocky — well, he has “that elusive ingredient, that ... spark that is the breath of life.”
