As one half of Jackopierce (with Jack O’Neill), Cary Pierce gets credit from all the North Texas scenesters for being one of the godfathers of singer-songwriter rock here. I guess you could say that Pierce was not-cool before being not-cool was, uh, cool.
His influence is everywhere, though not in the songs of the musicians who’ve come after him — strong singer-songwriter music had been happening long before Pierce was born and will continue long after he’s dead. No, Pierce’s legacy is manifest primarily in his successors’ hard work. The Dallas native proved that with a little elbow grease and good timing, a talented local musician can make a living off his music.
Or hers. One of town’s best singer-songwriters has managed to make a great name for herself through her music while generating lots of grassroots support. Melodic, vibrant, and able to switch easily between melancholy and carefree, April Geesbreght’s brand of guitar-based, radio-friendly fare is eminently lovable. Why her music isn’t blasting from some “mix” commercial radio station or from some young adult tv drama is a mystery.
When Geesbreght hits the stage, she’ll be pumped, fresh off a hiatus that began in mid-summer. Expect some new material.
