Going Through Stages

After their last production, a full-length play, Fort Worth’s favorite theater collective, SceneShop, returns Saturday to its usual presentation of theatrical monologues and scenes. (Its last production, landscape with stick figures, grew out of one of these performances.) With the services of a band fronted by the group’s founder, Les Cargot, the troupe will be at the new venue of Arts Fifth Avenue, which has been hosting an eclectic mix of music, performing arts, and spoken word events lately. The move isn’t permanent, though. Next week, they’ll be back at their familiar haunt at Stage West’s lounge.

For theatergoers who like to know the play they’ll be watching, however, UTA puts on Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer. This 1773 work is about an English squire’s daughter who impersonates a barmaid to win the love of a young nobleman who’s too shy around women of his own rank but loses his inhibitions around the servants. This farce was part of a flowering of English comedy that soon died out after Goldsmith’s early death and Richard Sheridan’s early retirement. It would be more than a hundred years before English theater — thanks to Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw — approached those heights again. However, you don’t need history to appreciate the way Goldsmith’s warmth and good humor still shine through the centuries.

SceneShop plays at 8pm Sat at Arts Fifth Avenue, 1628 5th Av, FW. Admission is $6.Call 817-735-2057 or 817-927-4994.

She Stoops to Conquer runs Thu-Sun at UTA, Fine Arts Bldg, 502 S Cooper St, Arlington. Tickets are $5-8. Call 817-272-2669.
