You can always spot the singer-songwriters in a crowd. Sometimes they’re the dark brooders. Sometimes they’re the dramatic raconteurs. And sometimes they’re the shy guys in the corner booths. But no matter what they look like, what they say, or where they sit, they always seem to be the centers of attention. Must be something in their pheromones.
Fort Worthian Jeff Price is a little of all of the above. A Houston transplant who found Cowtown through his older brother, noted singer-songwriter John Price, Jeff is fitting right in with this city’s close-knit (though sometimes to the point of insularity), mature, and often incestuous rock scene — some days it seems that every musician in town plays in at least three different bands. For the record, Price’s other outfit is The Fellow Americans, the hard-rock group formerly known as the Rio Grande Babies.
He’s played some solo shows before but not with as much buzz as this one coming up, where he’ll be backed by his band (masterful producer/guitarist Taylor Tatsch, bassist Nolan Thies, and drummer prodigy Cooper Heffley) and will be high on the fumes of the release of his sophomore full-length, Like Parallel Lines. Unlike his 2003 debut, Windows, the new disc was recorded patiently. The result is a more polished version of his raw lyrics, diffuse song structures, and steady backbeats. There are no pretenses but many insights. Think: the delivery of Elliot Smith plus the perception of Wayne Coyne.
