Pick-Ax to Dreams

To the editor: Having squandered my youth in the newspaper business for 20-plus years, rarely have I filled my quill with bitter black ink in response to a story. Huzzah and Hurrah! to Peter Gorman for his tribute to those poor, bloody walking-wounded among us who are forced to work “day labor” (“Sweat Inequity,” Aug. 11, 2004). I am one of those poor bastards who have survived 50 years, and my face shows every god-damned wrinkle. I have carried concrete, and I have dug ditches. Every “thunk” of the pick-ax has swallowed some of my dream. Let me tell you little over-confident SOBs, a simple divorce or a lawsuit can put you in line waiting for a number. Once you are there, it’s a long wait until the smell of anger and piss go away.

And to think, I was once an editor.
