This year’s Fourth of July comes eight days after a federal appeals court ruled the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional. And that’s fine. Night & Day thinks patriotism is what’s in your heart and the way you live your life, not little kids being made to recite a pledge they’re too young to understand anyway. America’s all about welcoming everyone regardless of which god they believe in (or indeed, if they believe in no god at all). If you don’t love that after everything that has happened recently, saying a few words won’t help.

This Thursday there’s all kinds of ways and places to show kids why we love America. Fort Worth’s official celebration moves to a new location outside LaGrave Field, so the fireworks start immediately after the Cats game. Bedford’s celebration includes live music along with the usual fireworks and family activities. Grapevine holds its fireworks show by Lake Grapevine, as usual. Fireworks also go off at Texas Motor Speedway for the Thursday Night Stampede, and at the Ballpark in Arlington after the Rangers’ game against Tampa Bay. Texas Wind Symphony takes their Fourth of July indoors, as they play Sousa’s music (some of it on the composer’s very own sousaphone), plus some other pieces. And there’s no reason why classical music and fireworks should be mutually exclusive — Concerts in the Garden presents an all-American concert featuring music by Copland, Ives, Gershwin, and Bernstein as well as Sousa. Savor your freedom at any of these venues, or anywhere else you want to be. It’s your choice, and that’s part of what makes America great.

Fourth of July celebrations are Thu at various locations around the Metroplex. See Page 14 in Calendar, for times, places and ticket prices.
