The Aardvark

A little Fort Worth rock ’n’ roll history: Back in the day, post-Beatlemania, Paschal High School was the stomping ground for teen garage combos like the Elite, the Cynics, and the Mods, all of whom had local singles and played gigs at clubs with “a-go-go” in their names. Those were different times, though, and I’ve often wondered what modern-day teens do to get their rock band thrills (since high school dances these days are more the province of DJs than bands).
If they’re Green River Ordinance, they play gigs at the Aardvark, the Ridglea Theater, and all over Deep Ellum with “real,” grown-up bands like Doosu, John Price, Spoonfed Tribe, and Sugarbomb. These — for lack of a better term — brats, mostly from Paschal, range in age from 15 to 17. I think one of ’em, who’s been playing since he was seven, used to be in this funky little blues band you’d see playing on the street in Sundance Square on Friday nights a couple of years ago. (Presumably he’s responsible for the SRV-inflected guitar on GRO’s “Feelings Gone.”)
While I’d still classify them as “developing,” their music, heavily influenced by radio-friendly classic rock (which now encompasses Stone Temple Pilots as well as Led Zeppelin), sounds a lot more polished than one might expect from a bunch of high schoolers. I’m also wondering if the “Green River” in their name is an allusion to Creedence Clearwater Revival or pre-Pearl Jam (if these kids old enough to remember either).
Surprisingly, this isn’t listed as an all-ages show, so I have to wonder what that could bode for my daughter’s co-worker, a senior at Southwest, who was trying to convince my girl to forgo Sleater-Kinney and go see these guys at the Aardvark a couple of weekends ago.
