Peace Negotiations
The Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit of 9/11 artifacts — items of daily life pulled from the rubble of the twin towers — opens at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History on the second anniversary of that tragedy. Not everyone is thrilled with the exhibit. The night before it goes on display here, while the museum hosts a pre-opening party to view the exhibit, groups of families and friends of 9/11 victims, along with other groups across the country, will be holding candlelight prayer vigils. In Fort Worth, appropriately enough, the vigil, organized by Fort Worth Peace Action, was to be held on the museum’s parking lot. However, museum officials, in turn, seem not so thrilled at that idea. First the group was told it needed liability insurance in order to gather on museum property. Now they’ve been told they can have their vigil over at the fountain in front of the Cowgirl Hall of Fame. Static wonders why the museum’s VIP guests don’t just join the peace folks in prayer — perhaps a better way to pay respects than wandering around looking at artifacts from the grave with a glass of white wine in hand.
Trilateral Collateral
All right-thinking people are counting their telemarketing calls until Oct. 1, when the national do-not-call law grips the industry by the throat and begins to painfully strangle it. In the meantime, Static has taken up tormenting the pitiful souls paid to perform evening interruptus, particularly those calling for companies that ought to know and do better. Last week it was “Shirley,” calling to peddle a subscription to The Dallas Morning News for the amazing low price of 50 cents a day — coincidentally, the same price the paper fetches in racks. “We give you the whole picture,’’ she explained, “not just the big picture.’’ Having serious questions about what parts of the picture the Snooze leaves out, Static countered by offering 15 cents. Shirl was unmoved. But in response to a tongue-in-cheek question, she allowed as how, why yes, maybe the Trilateral Commission does control the News. Ha! We always suspected that Belo Corp. was out for world domination. They probably also secretly finance the worldwide telemarketing conspiracy... .
