Classics for Klas
Performers from the former Soviet Union are in the spotlight for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s final concerts of the season. The guest conductor for this weekend’s programs is Eri Klas, from Estonia. The tiny Baltic nation is a hotbed of contemporary music, producing composers such as Arvo Pärt and Eduard Tubin and conductors such as Neeme Järvi and his son Paavo. Klas’ performances have done much to publicize his compatriots, and he’s continually seeking out new music. (His conducting debut was in a 1969 production of West Side Story at the Estonian National Theatre in Tallinn — that must have been an interesting evening.) Nevertheless, he’ll be dipping into the standard repertoire this week, conducting Beethoven’s The Creatures of Prometheus Overture and Shostakovich’s seminal Symphony No. 5 in D minor.
The instrumental soloist, pianist Bella Davidovich, is also from the former Soviet Union, specifically the Ukraine. She is one of several musicians who received large amounts of publicity after defecting from the Eastern bloc to the west during the late 1970s and early ’80s. She will be playing a piece that has long been associated with her, Chopin’s elegant Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor.
