Passing the Baton
This is the 12th go-around for Concerts in the Garden, and many of the guests will look familiar: Brave Combo, Don Edwards and Waddie Mitchell, and last year’s Van Cliburn Competition silver medalist Antonio Pompa-Baldi. Look closer, though, and you’ll see where the new blood is. Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra assistant conductors Eduardo Browne and Yens Georg Bachman both get a turn behind the podium, as do guest conductors Jonathan Schiffman and Michael Krajewski. None of these artists has ever led Concerts in the Garden before, so expect the old pops favorites to sound somewhat different.
The series kicks off Thursday with Browne conducting a program dominated by Baroque-Era composers Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, and Mouret (best known for the theme music from Masterpiece Theater). Cowboy balladeers Edwards and Mitchell will take the stage Friday and Saturday, and then newcomers Rick Treviño and Mi Son will perform on Sunday. In the weeks ahead, Bachman will put on a concert of Russian music (spiced with selections by Hungary’s Liszt and Romania’s Georges Enesco), and Schiffman will lead a concerto for double bass by early-19th-century composer Domenico Dragonetti. Browne will conduct music from sci-fi movies, and Schiffman will return with an all-American program narrated by the appropriately named Ralph Emerson. Let’s hope for more surprises in the future from our summer pops concert series.
