Amphibian Productions is a theater group based in Fort Worth, though they’re so busy shuttling between here and New York City that their Cowtown performances are only occasional. Local theatergoers talk about Amphibian’s productions the way birdwatchers speak of sightings of a rare species.
The bird is landing this week, as the troupe returns home for the first time since last August to stage Shaun Prendergast’s The True History of the Tragic Life and Triumphant Death of Julia Pastrana, the Ugliest Woman in the World. The play is based on the life of a severely deformed Mexican Digger Indian woman who married an American showman in the mid-19th century and toured the world as an anatomical freak. The play is somewhat heavy-handed in its message, but it has won good notices on the basis of its staging, which is in near-total darkness so that the audience pays attention to the woman’s words and emotions rather than gawk at her deformity. The playwright, an English actor with a fascinatingly erratic career working in radio, television, and film, will attend the premiere of this show, which will play New York in the fall.
