(The following is a dramatization of an actual fake editorial meeting. Really, they’re not this elaborate.)
Minutes of ad hoc editorial meeting. Location: Local watering hole. Members present: HearSay, “The Editor,” and Mutton Chops.
HearSay: “Guys, I got shit this week. What the fuck can I write about?”
“Editor”: “Hey, Mutton Chops. Who was that band was saw a couple weeks ago? I think at the Saffire?”
Mutton Chops: “What did they sound like?”
“Editor”: “They were kinda emo but Americana-y?”
Mutton Chops: “Oh, those dudes.”
“Editor”: “What’s their name?”
Mutton Chops: “I think it’s Engine of the Ocean.”
HearSay: “You got a c.d.?”
Mutton Chops throws car keys across the bar to HearSay. HearSay exits, returns with said c.d., pays tab, exits once more, enters own hooptie, stuffs c.d. into player, turns up volume, and hears ... Coldplay!
No, seriously. The Engine of the Ocean sound is piano-based Americana. Quiet songs even when they’re rocking, precious vocal harmonies, twinkling acoustic guitar lines, sassy tambourine shimmies (yes!), and other assorted old-timey instruments all a-moaning. Lead singer David Maverick’s voice is Eddie Vedder’s when the latter’s trying against his will to emote — you know, when he’s reaching that point where up pops that little quiver in his voice that’s tinged with something that’s not quite vibrato, not quite fear. Maverick’s voice is a nice forefront to a background that’s sparse but lush. Most of the tracks on the five-song e.p. in HearSay’s hooptie are loosely structured. Not half-developed, not misconceived, just loose. It’s exactly emo-Americana.
See Engine of the Ocean battle some bands tonight (Wed) at the Aardvark or check ’em out Wed, Oct 15, at the Saffire Lounge.
John Price
John Price, John Price, John Price. John Price, John Price, John Price. I love John Price. He is cool. Cool people are cool. John Price, John Price, John Price. The other day (John Price), HearSay was walking down the street (John Price), when someone said, “Hey, HearSay (John Price). Why do you always write about John Price (John Price)?” HearSay shot back, “Well, John Price (John Price) has just been signed to Aezra Records (John Price), headquartered in Phoenix. The same label (John Price) that’s home to Deep Blue Something, Chomsky, the Toadies, and John Price (John Price).” The guy (John Price) turned away and went back to whatever it was he was (John Price) doing. John Price, John Price, John Price.
