Playing Peek-a-Poodle
What is it with people who will talk about you all day long but can’t actually bring themselves to talk to you? The Weekly telephoned the publisher and the editor of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram last week seeking comment about the extreme makeover of the paper now under way, a redo that will result in shorter front-page news stories six days a week and a Monday paper with no front-page stories at all. Alas, neither publisher Wes Turner nor editor Jim Witt made the Weekly’s phones ring. Maybe they were both busy explaining to advertisers why they would want to buy space in the bowels of a newspaper being redesigned so readers won’t have to peek inside. We were, nevertheless, surprised to learn from our legion of moles deep inside 400 W. 7th St. that Witt has been telling people that he actually liked last week’s cover story, “More Sizzle, Less Steak.’’ Static hears that the daily’s head ed e-mailed his staff, thanking the “loyal’’ staffer who leaked his memo outlining the radical redesign. Come on, Jim, give us a jingle sometime — there’s this news-lite story about a poodle we can’t get past our editor.
