Rally Caps
This past weekend’s Spring Rally, a two-day event sponsored by the Weekly that attempts to unite rock ’n’ roll with custom car/bike culture, was not too well-attended but pretty fun. First tip of the hat goes to Saturday’s headliners The Smithereens, who not only seemingly hit every note but played as if there were 30,000 people crowded into the event space. (Actual attendance in the expansive LaGrave Field parking lot at the time was probably closer to the two-hundreds.) A second though no less enthusiastic thank-you goes to Sunday’s headliners The Burden Brothers, who not only played as if in front of 30,000 rabid fans but played super-hard in the rain. (What is it about outdoor festivals that brings da water?) Other noteworthy bands that HearSay either saw close-up or overheard from the comfy confines of the VIP tent (ah, the spoils of being redneck royalty) include the cut*off, whose crowd numbered in the single digits and whose emo-ish rock attracted a couple of tattooed and pierced jackasses/hecklers — the band still performed valiantly. The Dirt Blazers were also cool, if a little laid-back. Their set of alt-country had the soothing effect of tropical-scented ointment. Coolest of all was Go Fast, a speed-rock outfit made up of bona fide rednecks from Arkansas. They weren’t the loudest non-headliner band, but they somehow managed to achieve the fullest sound. Amazing what a little crystal meth and a few distortion pedals can do — speaking purely theoretically, of course.While HearSay’s in a magnanimous mood, might as well also thank all the good folks at the Weekly who helped put the thing together (Bob, Laura, Michael, et al.), Melissa Kirkendall of 3-Day Pass, all of the vendors (including Rockstar jean shop and Esoterica Salon, Red’s Barbecue, and 93.3-FM The Bone, among others), and all of the sponsors and businesses that contributed food, booze, and good-lookin’ servers (Coors, Shrimper’s, and Blue Mesa, among others).Next up, festival-wise: Music Awards.
