A number of Latin-themed events go on in North Texas this week, including Alex Reymundo (one of the Latin Kings of Comedy) doing stand-up in Arlington, the Vistas Film Festival playing in Dallas, a show of folklórico dance at Scott Theatre, and the Modern Art Museum kicking off its Spanish-language tours (see Sunday’s blurb).
Not to be outdone, the Latin Arts Association of Fort Worth is sponsoring two events at Rose Marine Theater this weekend. If you have an interest in Brazilian dance and missed the Balé Folclórico da Bahia’s appearance in Dallas last week, you’re in luck. The Urban 15 Dance Troupe, a San Antonio-based group that teaches traditional Brazilian dance and drumming, will be in town to perform dances related to Carnival.
Meanwhile, the 1964 film I Am Cuba sets out to be an anti-American portrait of decadent pre-Castro Cuba, but Mikheil Kalatozishvili (directing under the Russianized name of Mikhail Kalatozov) becomes intoxicated with the same decadence his movie is supposed to denounce. He films it in that spirit, which is what keeps the movie from becoming Communist kitsch. The opening shot around a hotel swimming pool was ripped off by Paul Thomas Anderson in Boogie Nights. It’s the first selection in the Latin Arts Association of Fort Worth’s Cine de Colores series, which will run throughout the year.
