The Movement
The only major artistic discipline other than architecture that busily intrudes on our everyday lives is fashion. And, like architecture, fashion can make pompous pricks out of otherwise normal, likeable folks. Seems that when it comes to choosing what to build or wear, everybody’s a frickin’ expert.
But these questions, though simplistic on the surface, are too complex for anybody but non-professionals to handle. As there’s more to architecture than bricks and mortar, there’s much more to fashion than matching colors.
We Cowtowners are lucky in one respect. While we may not have anyone to talk progressive architecture with, we do have a few fashion know-it-alls in our backyard to solicit advice from, including the good folks at Esoterica Salon.
Located in the fancy-schmancy ‘hood of Forest Park, the upstart hair-care company is staffed by — how you say? — proactive fashionistas. Esoterica hasn’t been waiting around for Fort Worth to all of the sudden get “hip.” Over the past several months, the salon has been bringing coolness to the Fort, chiefly by producing bona fide though low-budget fashion shows, replete with walks and the boom-siss-boom-siss sounds of Euro-trashy electronica. No, the editors of Vogue and W aren’t exactly canceling dinner dates with celebrities to descend on Esoterica’s events, but even a little bit of pręt-ŕ-porter ambiance is more than Fort Worth usually sees and is worth a look, even if most of y’all are only interested in ogling the models.
This season’s throwdown — The Movement, co-sponsored by Rockstar Clothing — is a celebration of Esoterica’s one-year anniversary and features cool clothes and music from DJ FXTC, DJ Jesie Snead, and DJ Detonator, plus special guests DJ Ivy (from the Latin House Crew, KDL/106.7-FM) and Jason Philter, one half of The Disco Agents.
A cynic would say that the Esotericians are merely trying to create a market for their high-falutin’ product, but cynics never let their hair down and have fun. The devil wears Prada, sure, but we all could stand a little redemption from our sartorial sins. — Anthony Mariani
