Wreck Room
By Ken Shimamoto
Consider the duality of the American rock ’n’ roll kid. Turn on the radio or venture out into Clubland these days and you’ll almost surely be confronted with one of two archetypes: the Melancholy Kid or the Angry Kid. Melancholy = yin = emocore = Elliot Smith, Death Cab for Cutie, et al. Angry = yang = hardcore = any band whose lead singer sounds like he took voice lessons from Great Satan.
Melancholy Kids think Angry Kids are obnoxious, and Angry Kids think Melancholy Kids are boring. Each deals with the same basic dilemma (e.g., boredom, alienation, the futility of life) in his or her own unique way: the Melancholy by wistfully contemplating it, the Angry by bludgeoning it to death.
Phleshpipe’s Will Stone is as close as you’ll find around the Fort to embodying both sides of the coin — he’s two kids in one. In Melancholy mode, he sounds like no one so much as Daniel Johns, post-Cobain anorexia poster boy for Aussie brats silverchair, who recently gave up the stage because he feels closer to God in the studio (I’m not making this up). Stone is Johns right up until he steps on the fuzzbox, set on “long hair.” Then, in Angry mode, Stone might not peel the paint of your house, but he’ll sho’ ’nuff scare the wig off your mama.
This former Boswell High School crew, a fave of several Weekly staffers, has been treading the boards for nine long years now, since the musicians were all of 14 years old, and these guys have a nice — how you say? — lack of intensity about success. (Web site? What’s a web site?) They’ve been on hiatus these past few months, and this Wreck Room show marks the band’s return to the Scene.
