Summertime in Texas

Summertime in Texas: unbearable heat, king-sized fire ants, ridiculous lines at Hurricane Harbor — all reasons to feel not so guilty about indulging in some of life’s guiltier pleasures. So between stuffing your face at Dollar-Dog Nights at The Ballpark and watching Girls Gone Wild videos, make room for the Metroplex’s newest indulgence, Djugdish.
With influences ranging from Oingo Boingo to Poison, Djugdish’s sound is just a few steps removed from old-school, dope-smokin’ rap. This Denton sextet’s refreshingly new twist on rock rap, the genre America loves to hate, could easily earn the band a spot on your c.d. player. They’re that good.
Led by singer Androo O’Hearn and his shockingly good rhymes, Djugdish (pronounced jug-dish) pounds out Limp-Bisquick-ized rock — but with heart. (Word is they can also make the rhythmically challenged wanna shake their thangs.)
While O’Hearn’s vocals are reminiscent of everything from operatic metal to hardcore hip-hop, Djugdish’s hard-hitting, bass-heavy music is anything but predictable. Complete with saxophonist Trent Talbert, Djugdish forgoes the over-simplified structures typical of rock rap in favor of more complex but equally catchy ways to deliver the goods. The focus is on creativity rather than on simplistic drum looping.
Brilliant vocals, a catchy sound: It may just a matter of time before the rest of the Metroplex catches on to one of Denton’s better-kept secrets. Simply put, while Djugdish may only be a guilty pleasure this summer, they could very easily become big crowd-pleasers by next year.
