Since moving from its old digs in Joshua to its current location on Bluebonnet Circle, south of TCU, Bart Rose’s First Street Audio has earned a rep as the Little Studio That Could. The last few months have seen First Street undergoing some improvements, not the least of which is hiring Soviet Space/Horses wunderkind Jordan Richardson as a staff engineer (nothing like using that expensive TCU degree).
Besides producing sessions, Rose and Richardson have been busy overhauling the studio and upgrading its gear. Even better, they’re expanding their capabilities to include an in-house mastering facility — eat your heart out, Crystal Clear. Said Richardson, “If Omaha can do it with their whiny, sappy Saddle Creek thing, we think we can make Fort Worth the next Seattle — or at least the next Tacoma.”
To show he’s serious about promoting local music, Rose has been sponsoring the Aardvark’s new-band night, and he’s just released his second volume of First Street Sessions, which he’s celebrating with a release party at the ‘Vark this weekend. While the 19-track compilation’s sonics are uniformly snat (of course), the music covers the whole spectrum of the local scene — both stylistically and quality-wise — from TCU aggros (Morning Overboard) to psychobilly (Stumble Bums, The Susans) to the obligatory sub-Creed alt-rock dreck to the smart pop-punk (believe it) of Sandcastle.
Highlights include the splendid pop-rock of Jerry (umpteenth Fort Worth band to feature ultracool drum-teen Cooper Heffley), the best song from A Capital Affair (a buncha Denton Thin Lizzy wannabes), Horses’ “Impressed” (which already sounds like a hit), and the first-ever release of a track from Bindle (who contributed members to Goodwin and Pablo and the Hemphill 7 and imploded before completing their debut album, which someone should release as a public service). —
