An Apologia For Ashlee
Got my weekly e-mail from good guys Tom (Urquhart) and Chris (Bellomy) of ÒThe Good Show,Ó a great radio program (on KTCU/88.7-FM) that your tired, huddled ears arenÕt gonna hear anywhere else but here in Funkytown. The missives are uniformly funny Ñ or they were until last week, when Tom mentioned something about burning a stack of ÒAshleyÓ Simpson c.d.Õs. Now IÕm all for setting flame to mediocre discs, but can we please stop piling on Ashlee Simpson?!? What is it about this culture that when an artist is unmasked as fraudulent in a sea of fraudulent artists, Americans go berserk? Some folks seem to feel as if patriotism requires that they criminalize the trespasser, even though a huge percentage of Americans are liars, cheats, and thieves, as fraudulent in their daily lives as Simpson appears to be in her career. Watching the young lady get booed at the Orange Bowl Ñ by a bunch of idiots who not only probably cheat on both their taxes and their wives but also donÕt have the balls to do anything but recline in comfortable chairs, drink beer, and watch football Ñ represents pretty much the worst that this country is capable of. For shame.
