Crunk Juice
What good’s a “smashing” cocktail dress if you can’t show it off? That seems to be what a lot of fashionistas think in Clubland. Enter: Robert Coronado, owner of Rockstar jean shop. Over the past year, the long-time sartorial maven has connected clubbing with clothing in a way never before seen in these parts, if not all of Tarrant County. What he’s doing is throwing “parties,” open to the public, at local clubs and peopling his events with models dressed in — what else? — Rockstar clothing.
Sure, North Texas has its share of “fashion shows,” but most involve people who wore bell-bottoms the first time around. Rockstar’s parties are young, hip, and, even though full of pretty people, open to all kinds. (Their last party was a delightful mix of queers, rednecks, and all points in between, kinda like Rainbow Rodeo.)
“We’re helping out the bar’s business, our business, and letting everyone in Fort Worth know something’s going on,” he said. “Every other store [in town] is more preppy and more conservative, and a lot of people want to wear hot, sexy, club-going-out stuff to bars. It only makes sense to promote there.”
The Cowtown native started his shows at spots like Café Aspen, Saffire Lounge, and Club Vivid. Response has been good, in some cases drawing the rumps of more than 400 folks. Bar owners have been knocking on Rockstar’s door for more. As Coronado puts it: “Basically people are wanting our crunk juice.”
Coronado’s days in the rags business started way back when. He’s worked for both women’s and men’s clothing departments at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Larry’s Shoes, and last year’s flash-in-the-pan off Bluebonnet, Olive Boutique. But all those stripes on his Adriano Goldschemied jacket sleeve are in the rearview mirror. Now he’s all about Rockstar and its new late-night partner-in-crime, hair salon Esoterica. Together, they produce monthly after-hours parties (’til 4 a.m.) — dubbed “Emergency Room” (“Esoterica/Rockstar”) — at Axis.
“You got the gay-friendly people, you got the fashion, the rock-star hairdos — it’s a good mix and a good network for everyone,” Coronado said. “Really promoting the store just goes along with it.”
“ER” has been quite the complement to another recent venture in the Fort Worth after-hours world. Last Call has noticed after a couple recent stumbles into downtown late-night that partiers at Axis have been taking the soiree to Vivid, where the revelry continues until dawn. (Glow sticks sold separately.)
Rockstar’s next event will be at the Saffire, Thursday, April 28. Musical guests will be everybody’s favorite ’80s-cum-’00s-era rock band Black Tie Dynasty.
