The Deep Ellum Arts Festival
Traditionally, the weather has been a great indicator that Mother Nature has shed her winter coat and is ready for some springtime fun. In this post-El Niño world, however, we’re apparently going to have to rely on the calendar and spring festivals as harbingers of the new season.
Now in its eighth year, the Deep Ellum Arts Festival provides an edgier alternative to the cotton candy and turkey leg-chomping events that populate the month of April. A full weekend of local acts includes sets by Lucy Loves Schroeder, Baby Jane Hudson, Slobberbone, Doosu, Sugarbomb, and Chomsky. If that’s not enough to lure you there, maybe the Pet Parade or Poetry Circus will do the trick.
Since it is, technically, an arts festival, you can also find some art — local art celeb Frank Campagna joins more than 150 juried artists, and the Art Car exhibition returns to offer a few more ideas on how you can disguise your father’s vintage Pacer as something other than a piece of crap.
Like all good springtime festivals, there’ll be plenty of food vendors, and the event is free. Best part? No screaming kids at this one. What are you waiting for? — Paula Felps
