Werner the Winner
He won the Marguerite McCammon Voice Competition last March, and now baritone Erik Nelson Werner returns to Fort Worth to perform a full-fledged recital. The 29-year-old singer has been drawing accolades on the competition circuit for his rich, steady instrument and his serious approach to material, winning fourth prize at London’s Wigmore Hall and the top prize at the 2000 Geneva Concourse.
His recital will include familiar fare, such as two arias apiece from Tannhäuser (the love song “Blick ich umher in Diesem edlen Kreise” and the tear-jerking “Lied an den Abendstern”) and Don Giovanni (the properly seductive “Deh, vieni alla finestra” and the rapid-fire “Finch’han dal vino,” sometimes referred to as the Champagne Aria).
However, his program also features songs that must have taken some work to track down. Three are by the obscure 20th-century German composer/organist Josef Knettel, while three others are by Paul Kletzki, a Polish composer better known as an orchestra conductor. Ravel’s Don Quichotte à Dulcinee is the Swiss composer’s last completed work, and its lightness and seductiveness should make an enlightening counterpoint to the German masters. Lee Hoiby’s adroit settings of three Walt Whitman poems will give the recital some American flavor. These lesser-known items, interpreted by a rising vocal star, should make the concert a unique experience.
Erik Nelson Werner sings at 2pm Sun at Martin Hall, 1201 Wesleyan St, FW. Tickets are $5-10. Call 817-531-4234.
