Doin’ Da DOMA
In case you haven’t heard, the Dallas Observer Music Awards ballot includes a lot of homegrown — as in Cowtown — talent, including Calhoun, Tahiti, Collin Herring, KTCU/88.7-FM’s “The Good Show,” Black Tie Dynasty, and two bands shared by both cities, The Burden Brothers and Flickerstick. Maybe the surge in Fort Worthiness has something to do with Dallas envy. Unlike in years past, the Observer this year decided to allow readers to select the top five or six bands in the categories by writing in choices on-line. Normally, I believe, the paper’s ballot is built in a similar fashion to ours. (We send blank ballots to a nominating committee, made up of local industry insiders, and ask them to write in their faves in various categories. Then we take the top five or six vote-getters and put them on the ballot that you, the readers, vote on.) Apparently, folks from this side of the county line regard the Observer as an exotic land, and now that they’ve been invited in, have landed with both feet. (And believe me, I doubt many Dallasites deigned to vote for artists from lowly Fort Worth; the Fort Worth acts on the ballot are undoubtedly the result of Fort Worth voters.) Couple this with the fact that Observer readers are probably sick of being hectored by the Observer (as Weekly readers are probably sick of being hectored by the Weekly), and Fort Worth is sitting pretty. This could all be bullshit, of course. Maybe music editor Sarah Hepola stuffed the ballots in Fort Worth’s favor herself. We’ll never know. All that really matters is that if you have any Cowtown pride, cruise to www.dallasobserver.com and cast your ballot for your neighbors. There’s a possibility that by winning an award or two, some of these Fort Worth acts might (gasp!) breach the wall separating them from new audiences.
