Still Strong
Ballet Arlington closes its season this weekend, minus two of its big guns. Lucia Lacarra and Cyril Pierre, whom the company shares with the Bavarian State Opera Ballet, begged off for this appearance, agreeing to dance three Texas programs next year instead of two. There’s still enough artillery, however, for an exciting evening.
Guest dancer Marianna Ryzhkina, the riveting Bolshoi principal, will be here, along with Arlington Ballet standouts Marina Goshko, Alexander Vetrov, and Mindaugas Bauzys, all of whom would shine in any international company. The company’s second tier of principals is nothing to sneeze at, either.
The program includes the Soviet blockbuster Carmen Suite, created for the incomparable Maya Plisetskaya nearly 40 years ago and rarely seen outside of Russia. The bare bones of the opera story are set in a specially orchestrated medley of the familiar Bizet music — heavy on percussion and syncopated rhythms. Ryzhkina will dance the title role, with Vetrov appearing as Don Jose and Bauzys as Escamillo.
Vetrov is also reviving the quintessential Soviet pas de deux, Spring Waters, set to Rachmaninoff’s music (Vetrov will dance with Goshko). More acrobatic than classic ballet, it features one-arm lifts and running leaps that have to be seen to be believed.
Bauzys takes the spotlight in Pieta, a contemporary solo by Lithuanian choreographer Jurijus Smoriginas, inspired by the Michelangelo sculpture, and the evening rounds out with George Balanchine’s Valse Fantaisie (music by Mikhail Glinka, as staged by Paul Mejia). The Texas Chamber Orchestra will accompany under Ron Spigelman’s direction.
