The Truth About Cats and Rocks

Alison Krauss and Union Station are this week’s main attraction at the Will Rogers Memorial Center, but there’s plenty of other events going on to keep you there for the weekend. For starters, the National Maine Coon Cat Club’s cat show kicks off the 2002-03 show season. Cat fanciers can see some of the best local animals and meet their caretakers. The cats will be competing in four divisions: kitten, household pet, premiership (altered and pedigreed), and championship (unaltered and pedigreed). Lovers of these sometimes mercurial but often affectionate animals will rejoice, and proceeds from admissions benefit North Texas Animal Shelter.

However, if you don’t like cats, or if you’re allergic to cat hair, or if you find the cat show’s $5 general admission price too steep, you might want to make your way down the hall to Texas Rocks!, the Fort Worth Gem and Mineral Club’s 51st annual show. (You might also want to come here if you’re interested in gems and rocks.) The show includes demonstrations, displays, a silent auction, an exhibit of fluorescent minerals, door prizes, jewelry, and a rock dig. Semiprecious stones and geological oddities won’t nuzzle you while you watch television, but their crystalline beauty exerts its own fascination. Whether your interest lies in shiny rocks or fuzzy felines, the Will Rogers complex is the place to be.
