Choppers by the Numbers
To the editor: The NHTSA has no way of knowing the actual miles traveled by individual motorcyclists (“Hogtown,” Sept. 1, 2004). My 20-year-old Harley has no odometer. A rate of deaths per traveled miles is based on estimates. The problem with this is that detrimental laws have been passed based on estimates, not facts. A more accurate statistic would be a comparison at the state level between accident rates and license and registration figures.
If you want eye-opening facts, check the statistics on the accident/fatality rates before and after 1956, when the interstate highway system was started. As the roads improved, so did the accident/injury/death rates. Despite the correlation between a high quality road system and lower fatalities, the federal government has many times used the threat of withholding highway funds unless detrimental laws are passed — based, of course, on estimates provided by government bureaucrats.

To the editor: I enjoyed the “Hogtown” article very much. However, your writer failed to mention one of the most — if not the most — popular places that this crowd goes to on Thursday nights. Chrome Grill has easily had 300 to 400 bikes on each Thursday night for the past two months. The bikes range from the custom choppers your article mentions to regular Harley-Davidsons and everything in between.
