Pound of Sadness
To the editor: I hope the Weekly can help me out here. I recently recovered my lost dog from the Humane Society of North Texas on Lancaster Avenue. The helpful staff told me the woman who brought in my escaped pet was in tears, fearing my dog would be put to sleep. Luckily I recovered my weimaraner, Korey, thanks to this woman’s kindness. Korey is safely at home with her family, and we are very grateful
Before I went to the Humane Society, I stopped over at the Fort Worth Animal Control Center. I waited an hour before I could see the kennels. I was informed by the man showing me around that I should check back because they hold animals for only five days. I asked what happened after five days, and he told me that the animals are evaluated for possible adoption but that about 80 percent are put down. Another disturbing discovery was that there is not a licensed veterinarian at the Animal Control Center. A man had found a scared black pug, which looked like it had been hit by a car, and the staff dismissed it and told him to take her to their animal entrance. I asked if there was a vet who would look at the pug, and the desk attendant told me that there was a vet tech who would “do the best he could.”
What was even sadder were the rows and rows of perfectly good-looking dogs that were lost from their owners or that no one wanted. I can tell you from this experience that I will get all my future animals from a shelter.
I know that the Weekly has addressed many animal issues in Fort Worth, (“Dogged by Controversy,” Dec. 27, 2001), but I am curious as to why the Animal Control Center is so deficient in its care of animals separated from their owners or abandoned. Is their office supplemented by county funds? I know that the Humane Society is funded only by donations, and they have a vet on staff. I think we could all stand to know a little more information about pet adoption, where to find a lost pet, and where to take found pets in Fort Worth. I will always be grateful for the lady who took the time to pick up my dog and take her to the Humane Society.
