Don’t Bring ‘Momma’ to SXSW
There are just some neo-traditional country songs that have “classic” written all over them, and Jerrod Niemann’s “I Love Women (My Momma Can’t Stand)” is one. Written by Rhett Atkins and Dallas Davidson, Niemann’s toe-tappin’ number that’s already getting some commercial radio airplay is, like a lot of successful mainstream country tracks, easy for guys and dolls to warm up to. “I love little tank tops, tight-fittin’ jeans / Blue-collared babies who ain’t scared of ol’ Jim Beam / Red lipstick on a Daytona tan / I love women my momma can’t stand.” See, the song brings out something visceral in both sexes. For the guys, it’s their reluctance to be seen as mama’s boys. For the gals, their willingness to use their bodies to turn men against their sweet — and smart! — mamas. A long-time Nashville songwriter who penned some stuff with Garth, Niemann graduated from South Plains College and relocated here to Cowtown, where he claims he learned to love the wordsmiths from Nashville’s halcyon days, the early 1970s, including Dean Dillon, Paul Overstreet, and Whitey Shaffer, the songwriter who, incidentally, penned the George Strait hit “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind?” Now on his own and with a guaranteed chart-topper in his holster, Niemann is gonna make a lot of other upstarts mad once he leapfrogs over them. “I love two-timin’, four-wheel-drivin’, eight-ball-shootin’ babies / Four-letter-word-usin’ girls gone half crazy / Scared as hell of weddin’ bells and diamonds on their hands / I love women my Momma can’t stand.” Of course, the follow-up to Niemann’s soon-to-be No. 1 single will be “Momma Was Right.” Visit JerrodNiemann.com or Category5Records.com. ... In addition to Best Fwends, Bosque Brown, The Rocket Summer, and The Theater Fire, the four Fort Worth bands that will be playing sanctioned SXSW showcases next month (see last week’s column), two other local acts, on Dallas-based Idol Records, are also going to be making the trip to Austin for the annual music festival and conference. Cowtown glam-rockers Black Tie Dynasty will be performing on Wed., March 14, at The Tap Room at Six (114 W. 4th St.) and on Sat. , March 17, at a private party. Also on Sat., old-school rap trio PPT (a.k.a. Pikhasso, Picnic, and Fort Worthian Tahiti) will play Visions (614 E. 6th St.). From 5 p.m. ’til midnight at F6 Gallery, at 2800 W. Division St., Liquid Bounce and DJ Aware will be making things groovy. Blending bits of jazz, soul, and rap, LB is very A Tribe Called Quest-y. Everything’s all trippy and smooth — it’s definitely night music. And like its closest local musical cousins, Confusatron and the on-again-off-again symphonic fusion outfit Bertha Coolidge, LB’s sound gets bigger, louder, and fresher in a live setting. The quartet also gigs next Thu., March 1, at The Wreck Room, (3208 W 7th St., in Fort Worth), where they’ll be playing with Confusatron and former Pablo and the Hemphill 7 bassist Marcus Lawyer’s music community project, Top Secret.
