Feel the Burn
The U.S. men’s soccer team’s run of success during last year’s World Cup tournament shocked only the pundits who weren’t paying attention. Major League Soccer is no longer a league where washed-up European legends go to squeeze out one more year before retirement. Now it’s a training ground for our nation’s best young talent in the sport.
The Dallas Burn went unrepresented at the World Cup, but they are nevertheless a solid MLS playoff team. Led by rugged captain Oscar Pareja, Dallas boasts staunch defenders Ryan Suarez and Tenywa Bonseu, past U.S. national team members Jason Kreis and Chad Deering, and smooth Bolivian playmaker Joselito Vaca. The burning questions about the Burn this year are: How will they deal with the loss of goalkeeper Matt Jordan, who signed with a Danish club? And where will they play newly acquired midfielder Brad Davis — on the left wing to take advantage of his left-footedness, or up front behind the strikers to maximize his all-around offensive skills?
Tarrant County will get to see the Burn up close this year and next, as the team plays in a temporary home stadium in Southlake before moving into their own entirely new facility in Frisco in 2005. They open their season against the defending champion L.A. Galaxy, who boast the last two league MVPs, Carlos Ruiz and Alex Piñeda Chacón; the crafty, dogged leadership of U.S. World Cup midfielder Cobi Jones; and a defense anchored by Hong Myung-bo, the captain of South Korea’s surprising World Cup team. With America’s players gaining credibility as never before, now’s a prime opportunity to see the MLS stars up close.
