Stones Throw

It’s one thing to have Stephan Jenkins (Third Eye Blind), Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), and Chad Kroeger (Nickelback) tell you how great your music is, but to have the one and only Snoop Dogg tell you he is impressed with your musical talents— that’s another thing altogether.
The truth is, all the aforementioned artists have caught on to what could be the Lone Star state’s best kept secret: Stones Throw. For the past three years, the Austin band has remained virtually unknown as they pack houses across Texas and patiently put the final touches on their yet-to-be-named debut album, due out early this summer. The band’s pleasant mix of guitar-driven, hook-laden rock blends almost seamlessly with their always-well-read lyrics, resulting in what Top 40 pop rock could — and should — be.
The only thing possibly more pleasant than their reinvention of good old-fashioned rock is Stones Throw’s understanding that a good live show is just as important as a good album. Occasionally sporting a feather boa, lead singer Rodney Orta plays each show like it’s his last. Using almost unimaginable amounts of energy, Orta delivers each line of each song with a sincerity that can make the most cynical of crowds understand his points of view and embrace them.
But while playing music that is just one notch removed from Top 40 can bring you endless articles from alt-journalism mags, praising your inventive abilities, one thing it will not bring you is fame and fortune. Hopefully, one of the marquee artists mentioned above will be secure enough in his celebrityhood to let Stones Throw fill an opening slot on an upcoming tour. Until that happens, plan on seeing the band at Club Optimo and other Texas holes in the wall.
