Fort Worth’s Hispanic community is becoming a crossroad of the Americas.\r\n
In her childhood innocence, Florencia Rodriguez Castillo appeared at the dusty door to the one-room school in Sonora, Texas, in the 1880s to ask to be allowed to learn English. She was denied. Three quarters of a century later, her granddaughter, despite discrimination and discouragement handed to her at every step of the way, became Fort Worth’s third teacher of Spanish. Now that retired schoolteacher — Yolanda Castillo Rodriguez — is teaching English, to new waves of Hispanic immigrants at the North Side’s Primera Baptist Church.
