This Bush Depression

To the editor: I’ve always said you can judge a society by the way it treats the poor, the so-called underprivileged, the mentally ill, and the infirm. These many years of corporate control have left our people homeless and jobless. Peter Gorman’s excellent reporting of the Fort Worth Day Labor Center (“Sweat Inequity,” Aug. 11, 2004) reveals the lack of compassion displayed by our apparently forward-looking city. Jerry Hoefer’s photographs capture the story with artful perception. With 1,800 people a month crowding the center with hungry hopes for labor and pay, the need clearly exceeds the funding ($230,000 annually). A proud city booming with expensive office buildings and luxury condominiums can surely afford a better-coordinated facility to help poor folk willing and wanting to work. These are troubled and desperate times for many, and as Mr. Gorman said, most of us are one layoff or illness away from the same plight.

Once again, thanks for letting us know about those struggling at the bottom. This Bush Depression will require Franklin Roosevelt-style federal work projects to solve the problems of our growing legions of homeless. Vote Democrat, and — as Jesse Jackson has said — “Stay out the Bushes.” We cannot leave the poor to the mercy of the greedy wealthy. Thanks for being there.
