The Sun

Every spring, as SXSW draws near, a lot of cities in the Southwest become the accidental beneficiaries of shows by ultra-hip indie-rock bands that are on their way to the Austin-based music festival and looking to squeeze in some extra gigs.
Fort Worth, surprisingly, gets its fair share of SXSW run-off. Of all probable shows, the one this Tuesday at the Aardvark may prove to be both the most exciting and least perfunctory. Jus’ passing through this time is The Sun, a Warner Bros. product from that indie-rock hotbed, Columbus, Ohio, whose sound is a history lesson on the past 40 years of rock ’n’ roll — from seemingly guitar-less Clash-esque punk to ’80s-era Squeeze-like Brit-Pop to the Summer of Love to ominous Krautrock to acoustic-based punk à la The Violent Femmes to most points in between. The Sun’s latest full-length, Blame It on the Youth, is a masterstroke in pacing, sonic diversity, and production quality.
Though The Sun alone is worth the price of admission, the quintet will be accompanied at the club by two of Fort Worth’s most progressive and awesome indie-rock bands, The February Chorus and The Burning Hotels. Featuring Flickerstick frontman Brandin Lea, TheFebChor can be described simply as epic, while the equally earnest Burning Hotels come on strong and loud yet are intriguingly melodic. Looking for the show of the year? This one may be for the ages.
