Backyard Debate
To the editor: Near the end of the article “Too Many in Their Backyard” is an interesting quote from Presbyterian Night Shelter director Carol Klocek: “Most of them [the homeless] are really good folks that are just trying to live their lives like anyone else.” Oh really? I’ve been acquainted for some time with a young man who seems to always end up on Lancaster, and through him, several others of the homeless ranks on that street. It may be a cliché, but it’s drugs and alcohol that send most of these people there, combined with the fact that most of them have long since burned their bridges with family and friends. Lancaster and places like it are for the hard-core losers, the chronic abusers. Give them a job and watch them screw it up in a few days — late, no-show, resistant to supervision, with no semblance of responsibility. All Klocek’s good intentions will never change that.
