Stop the Stacking
To the editor: In reference to your article “Nailing the Hammer,” (Second Thought, May 4, 2005), I would like to bring up another important issue involving Tom DeLay and other radical Republicans.
Going a step further than DeLay’s threatening remark to the Schiavo case judges, the radical Republicans’ new goal is to gain total control over judicial nominations. Consequently, the newly appointed Republican judges will likely seek to roll back decades of progress in protecting workers’ rights, the environment, and privacy. The vote on this “nuclear option” could be initiated as soon as next week. One last time, it’s up to us to rise to the occasion and show that Americans are opposed to giving one party absolute power to stack our courts with partisan extremists.
