Finally, a band fronted by chicks (with two dudes) that knows the value of blazing femininity. These broads aren’t crying about being broken-hearted or wondering when the next phone call is gonna come. No, they’re just trying to find someone to bang — be it you, your brother, or your daddy. But that’s not to say that they don’t have catchy-as-hell melodies. (Think L7 with a sweeter sheen but still all bite.)
“The Best Thing” lets you know they don’t need you, but they’ll give you what you crave. “Now you’re lonely and made you cry / Don’t need no reason to kiss your ass goodbye.” Delivered inside of tough, footstompin’ rock blast, like Bon Scott tackling the Go-Go’s before they traded in their pom-poms for glass spoons, the lyric resonates loud and clear. While “I Wanna Be Your Only One” begins innocently enough, with crybaby talk, the song quickly leaps into a fire pit of seductive punk guitars. An appropriate cover of Romeo Void’s “Never Say Never” fits snugly into the e.p.’s overall piss-in-the-wind attitude about relationships. Queens of the Stone Age’s attempt pales in comparison. Face it, a track this anti-man was meant to be conveyed by a chick with a snarl, not a dude with a penchant for wife-stealing.
“Why does it feel like we fucked last night?” innocently signs off Slunt’s no-punches-pulled take on bad love from the female point of view. Men aren’t the only ones who can slug whiskey, play grab-ass, and leave you feeling miserable in the a.m. Guitarist and vocalist Abby Gennet mixes her Angus-Young-meets-Joan-Jett persona damned convincingly, while the remainder of the band keeps the glue on the edges nice and tight.
Slunt most recently landed the coveted spot on the Marilyn Manson tour — how and why, who the hell knows. But given the razor-blade treatment of the in-your-face material here, it was a good choice.
