Their Way or the Highway
With important issues like school finance lingering in limbo, it’s mystifying to see state legislators wasting time on dumb things. Take for instance, last week. Senators shot down a proposal to name a section of Texas Highway 130 in Austin the “Willie Nelson Highway.” Perhaps “Willie Nelson High Way” might have been more accurate, since certain senators said they did not want to honor the hard-partying, pot-smoking, tax-troubled lefty country legend with road signs. “I think we ought to name highways after people when they’re dead and who had something to do with the road, not entertainers,” said State Sen. Jeff Wentworth, a member of the transportation committee. For the record, Tom Landry, whose name graces the section of I-30 between I-35E and I-35W, met only one of those two criteria (he was dead). For his part, Willie told the Austin-American Statesman he wasn’t comfortable with a toll road carrying his name. “Toll roads are not that popular,” he said. “I’d put my name on an electric chair, too, but I don’t think that’d be too great a thing.”
More information: Meanwhile, six Republican senators want to rename I-20 after transportation great Ronald Reagan. However, Dallas Democrat Royce West said his constituents disagree, so he countered with a bill to designate the portion of I-20 in his district the “President William Jefferson Clinton Highway.” If the choice is between a dead faux cowboy and a living adulterer, we vote for “Willie Way.”
