Wall of Sound Festival
One of the best things about those Lollapalooza shindigs was that they offered as many musical choices as moods. Kids buckling under the strain of parental oppression had punk. The ‘heads, hip-hop. The hippies, white-boy funk mixed with metal.
It seems so quaint now, the idea of a day-long festival whose purpose is ostensibly to expand the collective unconscious — expenses be damned — by allowing divergent people and ideas to cross-pollinate rather than stay in niches.
The Wall of Sound Festival is a niche-oriented event, but unlike its brethren (that’s you, Edgefest), WOSF is by its nature programmed to free some radicals. The pervading sound is shoe-gazing emo on the pop tip. Translation: Sonic mushrooms.
Some of North Texas’ best bands, in any genre, are on the bill, including Record Hop, Radiant, Black Tie Dynasty, the Snowdonnas, the Southern Sea, The Danes, Super Love Attack, The Golden Falcons, and Midlake. As with any music happening in which one style is paramount, concert-goers are in jeopardy of getting caught in a loop of similar-sounding bands. What’s cool about Wall of Sound is that while many of these bands alternately toast and flog the same influences, a lot are polished and well-trained enough to still be unique. Radiant and Black Tie Dynasty sound nothing alike, though both bands perfectly exemplify what can happen when the universal mind is cracked open. — Anthony Mariani
