Static hears that the spin machine for the Arts Council of Fort Worth and Tarrant County may be spinning out of control. Just as Fort Worth Weekly was going to press with a story about turmoil at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center and the widely rumored departure of manager C.J. Reynolds (“Toil and Trouble,” Sept. 8, 2004), a source called to say that Arts Council president Flora Maria Garcia was putting out word to the contrary. Reynolds hadn’t quit and wasn’t fired, the spin went, she was just going on vacation. As things turned out, Reynolds went on vacation and quit. For the time, she’s keeping mum on her reasons. But chaos has swirled around the center, which includes the Scott Theater, since the city turned management over to the Arts Council two years ago. Community theater groups that have long used the Scott complain that it’s being priced out of their reach and that visual artists are getting preferential treatment over the theater crowd. Reynolds had been credited with settling things down, but Static is sure her departure will again make the kettle boil.
