The Bigger They Are...
In the last scene of The Harder They Fall, sportswriter Humphrey Bogart is typing his lead: “Professional boxing should be outlawed if it takes an act of Congress to do it.”
That’s a minority view — just ask the wizards of pay-per-view and the legions of fans for whom the sport provides an opportunity to vicariously release aggro without actually pounding the crap out of anyone. On Tuesday, the sweet science takes its turn in Sundance Square, heretofore mostly a venue for arty or musical events.
Former Olympic gold medalist and seven-time world titleholder Oscar De La Hoya is one of the sport’s biggest draws. He’s also seeking to establish himself as a promoter through his Golden Boy Productions. This week, he’s presenting his first Metroplex event, ESPN2 Tuesday Night Fights, in the heart of downtown.
World contenders Juan Valenzuela and Kelson Pinto headline the six-bout professional card, part of the 2003 Miller Lite Texas Title Belt series. In the main event, the powerful Mexican welterweight Valenzuela, who knocked out No. 1 contender Julio Diaz in a single round, takes on Brian Adams — unfortunately not the Canadian singer, but rather, a scrappy hustler from New York. The undefeated Brazilian Pinto faces Saul Duran from Juarez, Mexico.
In a bout to decide Miller Lite’s Texas champ, Fort Worth native Kendrick Releford, a former Texas Golden Gloves champion, will take on the current heavyweight champion, Mexico’s Augustin Corpus.
High rollers who can afford the C-note for VIP ringside tickets get waited table service and a pre-fight reception at City Streets with De La Hoya.
